Now its after 10, and the boy is sufficiently stimulated by a morning full of cartoons. I like to get him outside first thing in the morning, but I had to call the doctor. I’ve been forgetting to do this for over a week now, and usually when I do remember its after 2 pm and they only answer the phone from 9 until 1 in the afternoon. So, finally remembering, I called right away at 9 am, was number 8 in the queue and have been dealing with that for the last hour.
I also had planned on taking Peter to an auto museum not too far from our place, but gale force winds will also prevent us from getting there by bike, and the bus just doesn't go that way.
Last night we made pizza for dinner. I have tried to make pizza here a few times now – I’ve used boxed dough, pre-made dough, I’ve used the stone, and regular old pizza pans. I’ve left the dough to rise, and I’ve baked it a bit before adding toppings. But it never crisps up. I have the same problem with homemade fries. Even though I can hear a fan blowing, my oven doesn’t let the steam out until you open the door. Vegetables that should be roasted turn out soggy, pizza crust gets fluffy but stays soft (and not in a good way).
At a birthday party last weekend we made individual pizzas. The crust was pita bread cut in half the hard (difficult) way, like you would slice a bagel only the pita is much thinner. This is how we made dinner last night, and its been our best pizza crust so far.
Tonight we’re having Mexican – chicken, rice, and beans. I had Rich get out of bed last night and take the chicken out the freezer – he’ll do that for Mexican night. The freezer here is like DEEP DEEP freeze. And there is no way to control it, it sets itself. So you can’t just thaw something, its takes time. And I normally don’t have a great mind for thinking ahead.
Here is an odd Danish “law”…So I’m washing dishes after dinner last night – its about 7:30, and a guy shows up at the door. He hands Rich a pamphlet in Danish (and some sort or Arabic language, maybe Turkish). He’s got a badge, he looks legit. Turns out you need a license to have a TV, and that license costs 1100 Kronner, or about $200. And every time you move you have to pay this registration fee AGAIN.
What I find odd is that we’ve been here 5+ months, and now, all of the sudden, during an hour when most stores are closed, this guy shows up at our door, and has us give him our CPR number (punching that number in Danish computers tells them EVERYTHING about you). All because we have something as normal as a TV.
