And, after dropping Pete off at bornave yesterday (not today, Barrett Banter explains why Pete's at home for a bit), I popped over the the neighborhood grocery to pick up some lemons. I was happy to see that they beefed up their mid-eastern and organic food sections (its only two wall shelves worth, but for a small store like this its fantastic). Inspired, I picked up a bag of yellow lentils and headed home to make dal. This was my first time making dal, so I checked out a few web recipes and my veg cookbook for ideas. What I ended up doing was this:
Rinse and gently boil lentils until soft (keep an eye on the pot, you need to add about 1/4 cup water every 10 minutes). Salt to taste (at this point it might be a good idea to have some self control and not stand at the stove and just keep eating the freshly boiled lentils like I did). Then add some crushed garlic, ground coriander, cumin, and turmeric, along with sauteed onion and some veggies ( I had broccoli on hand, I think cauliflower would have been better). I served the dal over rice as a side to salmon. Although the dal is not the most visually applealing thing I've ever made, it did taste good and I'm pretty sure I'll be trying to improve this recipe in the future.
Do you recognize this artwork?

Its common to see this impage on display (signs in the park) around town, and I was told it represented HC Anderson. I was curious as to why, but I just figured it was some Danish artist's interpretation. Well, it turns out it is artwork created by HC Anderson himself - its a small cut-out on display in the HC Anderson museum.
That's one less thing to ponder.
