The Latest Experiment

On the doorstep Friday afternoon I found a small, half smashed box labeled "Please hold at post office for customer pick-up".

It was our red wigglers order (1200 worms per pound). These little guys are going to process our food waste through the winter (hopefully). I think this way of composting - vermicomposting - may take a little more practice and than the outdoor compost bin. But there's no better way to learn than to just go for it I guess.

These guys live off of food scraps and newspaper. They also live in your home, usually in the kitchen. There is supposed to be no smell at all. I guess we'll find out. Right now my main concern is keeping them warm enough through the winter. Our kitchen is usually our coldest room in the house.

Peter had a really hard time keeping his hands of the things.

I have heard of the worms in the kitchen. If you get a glass tank you can see the layers of the compost and how they are recycled. How many did you get in your box? Did they all live? Is Pete going to name them?

I can't put these guys in glass becuase they hate light. that's why we got a dark box and put them in the closet.

Rich and Pete fed them last night, I honestly don't know how many are alive still since they hide. If the food doesn't disappear, then I'll bet that they're dead.
