When people in Denmark asked me how I liked it there, I often told them I had a love-hate relationship with the country. And now I'm having the same thoughts about being back home.
I love love love the farmer's markets. Last night's dinner was almost exclusively farmer's market fare (until my dad threw some steaks from Cub on the grill- it was supposed to be vegetarian night - arrrgg).
I've got to go back next week and talk to the woman that I bought the tomatoes from. They were big, firm, and totally beautiful. And that baby bock choy was killer.
Here is a squash that people are starting to become more familiar with. I first had it when we lived in Iowa (about 5+ years ago). Its called patty pan zucchini (or squash). Oh So Yummy.
And I hate hate hate the grocery stores. Just buying milk confuses the heck out of me. In Denmark it was either økologisk, or it wasn't. Here I have hormone free, OR all natural, OR USDA Organic, with Omega 3, OR without. Marketing ploys through and through. And it really takes patience to sort through it all.
And then I catch myself being super critical of everyone. If they could hear my thoughts, they would not not not be pleased. I might be hemming and hawing over milk for my son, but other people are doing the same in the pop isle. Which brand is the cheapest this week, and how much can I fit in my cart. Really? Do you really need 4 cases of orange crush? Maybe you should get a bottle of water and go for a walk.
Then I see my neighbors, and how they have changed over the time we've been gone. I'm scared for America people. We are not the healthiest looking bunch. I could really go off on a tangent here and get myself into trouble...health care is problem?...our health is a problem. At this point, I'd fix the second one first.
But I'm not perfect either. Since being back I've eaten oreos and fried chicken. Just not bucket fulls.
I'll stop now while I'm ahead.

Great post! I can definitely relate. Sometimes it seems I'm destined to have a love-hate relationship with wherever it is I happen to be.
Still, I do envy you being back in the US!
You know what? This post was really helpful to me. Underlines what I knew all along, that where-ever we are, there will be pros and cons.
I love the little squash! I planted some a few years back.
Boy do I hear you! It's always a love-hate thing, no matter where you are. And I always have a moment of culture shock when I am state-side. Walk into a Safeway and stare.... it's so big. There's so much food! Gawd, it's full of Americans!! AHHHHHHH!
