The blog title doesn't even get capital letters, that's how disappointed I am.
Thursday afternoon I went and saw THE Golden Compass. I don't usually "out" to movies so this was a big event for me.
Looking back, I knew it was going to be bad (seriously - I'm a realist), but I also knew if I didn't see the show I'd kinda regret it.
Well, -two of the other three people in the theater (besides myself) left before it was over - not a good sign. Overall, too much story was wedged into an hour and a half, the darkest and scariest parts of the story were skimmed over or eliminated all together, and just so you were not totally lost, they spoon fed you all the details. And because deciphering the details is what makes the story so intriguing...
The most perplexing scene for me was when they were on the Gyptian boat heading off to fight. They were all just sitting around, and then the Gyptian leader just starts monologuing on how when the find these people...oh...they better watch out, and the main character Lyra, is sitting there seething (and not doing a very good job at it). All this (supposed) rage - out of nowhere. Then, on to something else. Whaaa?!
What's most odd is, without Nicole Kidman, the movie would have been a super total disappointment. I think it was the character she played. It was the most developed one, and she is a good actress given the right part.
Skip the movie and use the $6 to go and buy book 1 of the trilogy.
