(Now with author comments!)
You can get lucky in love, or maybe better yet - lucky in publishing.
First off I'll admit that I read romance from time to time. (But I also want to point out that they've got to have some sort of plot and reasoning. I dislike the obscure ripping off of cloths in each chapter.)
Anyway here is a plug for a romance writer who happens to be friends with my aunt. She used to be a copywriter/marketing person, and as she moved into middle age (50 or so) she got laid off from her job.
With this major turn of events she decided that what she really wanted to do was to write a soap opera. Her husband (who thought differently) kept getting mad that she was locking herself into the bedroom studio all day and night to write.
Coincidentally, she had a roofer coming in to do some needed repairs. Being friendly they got to talking, and he said that he had a friend working in publishing - and he gave her the contact info.
Well, she sent it in and they liked it, but wanted it to be a novel, not a soap opera. She did the rewrites and WALLA! And now she's just completed the sequel to the first novel called Awakening Allaire.
Good for her!

Melissa, Please accept my heartfelt thanks for blogging about me and my efforts! My counsins from Germany chimed in this morning so I'm getting great coverage today in Europe! This has been a fascinating experience and I'm looking forward to seeing Awakening Allaire come out next month! I think Avenging Allaire, the sequel, will come out in first quarter 2010.
I'm looking forward to picking blueberries with your mom and your Aunt Paulette (she's near the top of my all-time favorite people!) in August. When you get home, I'd love to meet you, too.
Thanks again for writing about me in your fabulous blog.
Regards,
Margie Church
It was my pleasure Margie. Your story deserves to be heard. Hard work, then a bit of luck chatting with the roofer - who knew!
Have fun picking blueberries…which reminds me of one of my favorite books 'The Canning Season' from which I'll quote (probably incorrectly) the two ancient ladies - "watch out for those god dam bears!"
Fortunately, your Aunt Paulette is good with a shotgun if we should find a bear! LOL Without getting too introspective, one has to wonder about the hand of God bringing the storm, and the incompetent first insurance company bringing another adjuster and me just happening to discover them wandering on my roof to learn the guy used to work with Sherry Derr-Wille. Go figure. Sounds like a lot of dumb luck. Now what does that say about me? ROFL
